Jonathan Howard Katz is a NYC-based composer and pianist who enjoys a varied and eclectic career. His music has been heard at venues such as Symphony Space, Bargemusic, Merkin Hall, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, the International Piano Competition of Orléans, Jacob's Pillow, the Kozciuszko Foundation, Roulette, and Spectrum, and has been performed by the Mivos Quartet, Da Capo Chamber Players, Ensemble Pi, Alia Musica PIttsburgh; pianists Ursula Oppens, Jerome Lowenthal, and Winston Choi; violinists Elissa Cassini, Yuriy Bekker, and Emily Popham Gillins; cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, and many others. Commissions and other support have come from NYSCA, New Music USA, Concert Artists Guild, the O'Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation, the Charles and Joan Gross Family Foundation, and numerous individuals.
Recognized as a leader in interdisciplinary work with dance, Dr. Katz has collaborated as composer with over thirty choreographers, including Seán Curran, Gabrielle Lamb, PeiJu Chien-Pott, Manuel Vignoulle, Alia Kache, and Kate Skarpetowska. He directed Periapsis Music and Dance for its entire 10-year run, performed as guest pianist with New York City Ballet at Lincoln Center and the Guggenheim (Works and Process), and taught music classes for dancers as faculty at NYU Tisch. He holds a doctorate in piano performance from Northwestern University and degrees from New England Conservatory and Indiana University.
